We Who Are

WE ARE ALL LOCAL RESIDENTS LIKE YOU

The team came together in January 2020 ,to inform and assist fellow Great Baddow residents and club members, who are also concerned about the future of Hamptons Sports and Leisure Club.

The Save The Hamptons group held a series of public meetings in January/February 2020, which were well attended, and showed the level of support locally.

The future plans of the new owners have far reaching implications for Great Baddow. We want to encourage dialogue, discussion and community interaction.

There are two things about this campaign that we cannot change:

  • The owners of Hamptons are the Chelmsford Muslim Society

  • The use of Hamptons as a large mosque, threatens it’s existence as a sports and leisure facility.

It’s not about race or religion, the group is called Save The Hamptons, not stop the Great Baddow Megamosque.

This remains a local issue. Hamptons is a much needed sports and leisure facility with strong ties to the local community, which has been a part of Great Baddow for over 50 years.

the right to worship

We fully respect everyone’s right to worship, but that cannot be to the detriment of the private lives of local residents (and club members).

Our message is clear and simple, Hamptons is the wrong location for a large mosque. There are four main issues:

  • Parking

  • Noise and disturbance

  • Loss of leisure facilities

  • The sustainability of the business

It’s clear that the Chelmsford Muslim Society seeks to establish a wider scope for worship and related religious activity at Hamptons. However, the 2021 application for a Certificate of Lawful Existing Use and Development at Hamptons was refused by the City Council. Our video explains it all very clearly:

29th October 2021 Certificate of Lawful Existing Use and Development

This was followed by:

September 29th 2022 Certificate of Lawful Proposed Use and Development

The Chelmsford Muslim Society have used every trick in the book to incrementally increase the use of the venue as a mosque and madrassah, and decrease the use as a genuine sports and leisure facility.

Our Team

The use of the Hamptons as a mosque has attracted the attention of both right wing and left wing groups. For this reason, many of our team have chosen to keep their identities private.

How you can help

We get little coverage in the local press, who have rather decided not to cover the controversial use of Hamptons as a mosque, and our ongoing campaign.
